10 Mar 10 Which way will China move?

Dyer’s article China: A populist rising[1] makes some interesting points, especially for scenario planners focusing upon the direction of globalization.  Clearly, 2012 must go into the calendar as a key shaping event – an event that we know will occur – and when it does, will allow us to see more clearly the final shape of the post-Great Recession world.

2012 is the date when major changes to China’s leadership will take place.

Importantly, this article raises doubts as to China’s future direction when the new leadership team takes position – will it continue down a liberalizing path or will it adopt a more nationalist stance, limiting, for example, its sphere of influence to Asia?

A serious question that Western businesses with Chinese interests need to consider now.
